Meghan Markle’s wedding dress is arguably the biggest fashion commission and best-kept secret of 2018.
Now, on May 19, the rumor mill has come to a halt, the bets are off, and Markle has married Prince Harry, and become the Duchess of Sussex, wearing Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry capitated the nation in a very emotional ceremony, exchanged vows in front of 600 guests including the Queen, more than 30 royals and famous faces such as Oprah Winfrey, tennis champion Serena Williams, actor George Clooney and his barrister wife Amal Clooney, Sir Elton John, David and Victoria Beckham and actor Idris Elba.
Markle married Prince Harry, and became the Duchess of Sussex wearing Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy. Markle met Waight Keller in early 2018 and "chose to work with her for her timeless and elegant aesthetic, impeccable tailoring, and relaxed demeanour," Kensington Palace said that the dress, epitomises "a timeless minimal elegance referencing the codes of the iconic house" - marks a collaboration between a modern princess and a designer who is emblematic of the new royal era she is leading."Ms Markle also wanted to highlight the success of a leading British talent who has now served as the creative head of three globally influential fashion houses – Pringle of Scotland, Chloé, and now Givenchy.
The duo worked closely together on the design, which was created out of double bonded silk cady and had a purity that was achieved using six meticulously placed seams. The graphic open bateau neckline was the focus, in order to "gracefully frame the shoulders and emphasise the slender sculpted waist," while the lines of the dress extended towards the back "where the train flowed in soft round folds cushioned by an underskirt in triple silk organza, “the statement read. "The slim three-quarter sleeves [added] a note of refined modernity," while the shoes were based on a Givenchy refined pointed couture design made of a silk duchesse satin.
The veil, meanwhile, was designed to represent the distinctive flora of each Commonwealth country united in one spectacular composition. Made from five meter-long silk tulle with a trim of hand-embroidered flowers in silk threads and organza, it was held in place by Queen Mary's diamond bandeau tiara, lent to Markle by the Queen. The bandeau, made of diamonds and platinum, was complemented by Cartier earrings and a bracelet by the French jeweller.
Both Prince Harry and the Duke of Cambridge wore the frockcoat uniform of the blues and royals, which were tailored at Dege & Skinner on Savile Row.
Meghan’s second dress was designed by Stella McCartney, is “a bespoke lily white high neck gown made of silk crepe,” according to a statement from the palace. The dress features a high, halter neck, with an open back and a train that Meghan carried as she walked to a blue Jaguar that would carry her and Prince Harry to their reception.
